Rhiain

Piano and Harp Teacher

Rhiain

Rhiain is a professionally trained harpist and pianist. She holds a BMus(Hons) degree from the Royal Northern College of Music after entering with a scholarship and a MMus degree from Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, both in music performance. She has enjoyed performing from a very young age and has been teaching both harp and piano for the past ten years. Rhiain teaches students of all ages and abilities and has successfully taken many of her students through ABRSM exams. She is privileged to have spent nearly two years working at The Purcell School for Young Musicians where she taught music theory and aural one to one on a weekly basis, giving students an extra boost before their ABRSM exams. She prepared many sixth form students for their grade five theory ensuring that they gained this crucial qualification before entering conservatoire.

During her time at RWCMD Rhiain completed an instrumental teaching module which gave her the opportunity to learn more about different teaching techniques and approaches. Every pupil is different and learns in different ways and she believe that it is important to identify what each student responds to in order to get the best results. She believes that learning should be fun and engaging and works hard to identify the needs of every student.

Rhiain holds a DipABRSM and an LRSM diploma and has enjoyed many successes in Welsh Eisteddfodau and festivals including first prize in harp competitions at the National Eisteddfod and the National Cerdd Dant Festival. She was also a finalist in the Pencerdd Gwalia festival in 2013 and received the Welsh Fusiliers prize at RWCMD. As a performer Rhiain has a variety of unique experiences, including duetting on early Erard harps with former Royal Harpist Catrin Finch, performing Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro and Paul Patterson’s Spiders Web at the Dora Stoutzker Concert Hall and being invited to perform with Catrin Finch at the World Harp Congress in Hong Kong. As well as teaching and performing as a soloist, Rhiain also enjoys creating music with others and is one half of harp duo Dwyres alongside her sister Elfair Grug. Dwyres are proud to have been a part of Osian Ellis’ 90th birthday celebration concert at Pontio Bangor alongside Bryn Terfel and Hannah Stone, which was broadcast on Radio Cymru.

Rhiain holds an enhanced DBS check.

‘I have had flute lessons for nearly 3 years now and I absolutely love it more everyday. The lessons are really fun because Rachel makes me work hard but makes it really fun and interesting at the same time. Flute was my first instrument and I wasn’t sure how it would go but now I play 3 instruments and have a music scholarship at my school because of Rachel. I practise every night because I love it, no one has to nag me, it is my relaxing time or when I feel fed up…I just play and feel better. I love performing with The Surrey Sound of Music..we all get on well and have so much fun practising and performing makes me really happy. In June we all went to see The Lion King and in November we are going to see Matilda, I can’t wait!! I want to play flute forever.’

Rachel has been teaching our daughter, Heera, flute from the age of 7. In just over 2 years Rachel has successfully guided Heera through the first 3 grades and Heera is now about to take her Grade 4 exam at the age of 9. Heera always looks forward to her flute lessons with Rachel. She is very encouraging, positive and a great teacher. She makes the lessons fun for Heera while preparing her for the exams. I really recommend Rachel as a music teacher.’

‘My daughter started having flute lessons with Rachel almost 2 years. Rachel is awesome and the encouragement and patience she has shown over the past two years has never faltered. She is talented and professional at all times. My daughter looks forward to her flute lessons and has progressed extremely well, achieving her Grade 5 music theory and Grade 6 flute exam. Rachel is fun and friendly but at the same time, firm. Rachel challenges my daughter to play music that she is not particularly comfortable with and this has helped her to grow in confidence as a flautist. Rachel is extremely well organised and communicates well both through email and her website. She organises twice yearly concerts for her pupils of all standards to get together and perform both in front of each other, and to their families and friends. I would thoroughly recommend Rachel as a flute teacher.’
